Flybe Birmingham Airport flights a success

Regional low-cost airline Flybe says that it has succeeded Birmingham Airport where British Airways failed. Exactly one year on after taking over from an ailing BA Connect in Birmingham, the airline says that it is going from strength to strength.
Mike Rutter, Flybe's chief commercial officer, confirmed they were making a profit where BA Connect had failed to. He said: 'People understand that we provide a strong service and we have won a lot of new corporate contracts on Birmingham routes that BA Connect didn't have.'
He said the airline's success was due to a number of factors including aggressive marketing and aircraft that use 50 percent less fuel than those which had been used by BA Connect. He added that there had been strong backing from the business community in the region and the addition of things such as dedicated lounges, a frequent flyer programme and kiosk check-in facilities had strengthened that backing.
Flybe currently operate 28 routes out of the airport and is expecting to announce another four in three months' time. This will result in the creation of an extra 400 new jobs in the region, 100 of which will be at the airline itself with the remainder in associated industries. This year Flybe will carry 7.1 million passengers, almost 2 million of which will be flying to and from Birmingham.
