Birmingham Airport passengers down 6%

Passenger numbers at Birmingham Airport were down 6% during August, but the airport still handled more than one million. A total of 1,014,612 passengers passed through its two terminals, including 714,663 scheduled passengers and 299,949 charter passengers.
Joe Kelly, Birmingham Airport’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, commented: ‘Despite traffic being down 6%, we surpassed the one million passenger mark in August making it the busiest month this year. The Midlands market is a reflection of the tough trading conditions. which continue to affect the whole industry.’
During August significant growth was achieved on scheduled flights to destinations including Arrecife (+117%), Krakow (+94.3%), Larnaca (+62.5%), Inverness (+52.1%), Reus (+43.6%), Alicante (+42.2%), Toulouse (+38%), Newquay (+31.2%), Hanover (+26%), Tenerife (+25.3%), Palma (+24.7%), Mahon (+21.5%), Ercan (+19%), Shannon (+18.6%), Dubai (+15.1%), Faro (+14.8%), Malaga (+10.6%) and Torp (+10%).
Charter passenger growth was achieved on routes to Egypt (+49%), Turkey (+25.9%) and Madeira (+25.7%). Scheduled traffic accounted for 70.4% of the total passenger traffic in August whilst charter passengers made up the remaining 29.6%.
