Birmingham Airport runway extension ‘to be approved’

Plans to expand the runway at Birmingham Airport are set to be approved by councillors. Solihull Council's planning committee unanimously backed the £125m project to extend the runway by 400m (1,329ft), but the final decision has been deferred until January so that councillors can review environmental measures to protect people in the area.
The airport’s current runway limits the range of long-haul destinations available. If approved, the extended runway would allow larger aircraft to operate, as well as non-stop flights to the West Coast of America, South Africa, South America and Asia. Under the project, the runway would be extended 405m towards Bickenhill and Hampton-in-Arden.
Birmingham Airport CEO, Paul Kehoe, said he was ‘disappointed’ it had not received approval at the meeting but added: ‘We will continue the dialogue with Solihull Council so that a positive decision can be made early in the New Year.'
