Birmingham Airport boss confident on runway extension
16.04.10
Birmingham Airport's boss has insist that a planned £120 million runway extension will be built by 2015 at the latest. The new target date is three years later than initially planned, and the money to pay for the project is not yet in place, but chief executive Paul Kehoe has reassured the business community that the scheme will soon get off the ground.
His comments came after claims this week by environmentalists Friends of the Earth that a longer runway enabling planes to fly directly to China, India and the west coast of America conflicts with both the Government's and Birmingham Council's commitment to cut emissions. The group also claim that two local councils will pay up to £32m to divert the A45 in order to help the extension scheme, which has planning permission, off the ground.
