A young Spaniard who was caught with more than £150,000 worth of cocaine when he arrived at Birmingham Airport from Mexico has been jailed for 9 years, the Mail reports. Serafin Martin-Vincente, 22, from Malaga, Spain, had pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to being involved in the illegal importation of the class A drug.
Prosecutor Fayyaz Afzal said that on September 6 customs officers intercepted Mr Martin-Vincente as he went through the green channel. He had travelled from Malaga to Birmingham and then Cancun before going on to Panama and retracing his route back. He had hidden in the base of his suitcase they found 3.44 kilos of cocaine worth over £150,000.
When questioned he gave a prepared statement in which he claimed he had no knowledge of the drugs. He suggested the cocaine had been put into his case without him knowing by cleaning staff at the hotel where he had been staying in Cancun. He was jailed for nine years.
