Birmingham Council ‘will not sell airport’

Birmingham City Council's chief executive today said it would not be dictated to by the Government after Business Secretary Lord Mandelson called for local authorities to sell assets - including airport - to help pay down Government debt, the Birmingham Mail reports.
The Government is urging the sale of airports alongside civic buildings, business parks, council estates and a range of other assets including the cross-Channel rail link and the nationalised bookmaker the Tote to help reduce the national debt. But , Birmingham City Council insisted it would resist pressure from Ministers.
Stephen Hughes, the Council’s chief executive, said: ‘All assets owned by the city council are managed for the long-term good of the city and its people. The Government cannot dictate to us how we manage them.’
