Reus 26th Ryanair base; Birmingham flights announced

Ryanair has chosen Spanish airport Reus as its 26th European base and its 5th base in Spain. The budget airline will invest $140 million in two new aircraft to operate 12 routes from the airport, in Tarragona, 80 km south of Barcelona, including one to Birmingham Airport.
Promoting the launch wearing a dress, a wig and wings, Ryanair CEO, Michael O'Leary, said: ‘We congratulate Reus for fighting off stiff competition from seven other airports across Europe to win this new base, which guarantees over 1 million passengers a year. Ryanair will now develop the region's massive untapped potential by giving the tourism industry year round low fare access to Europe's largest cities.’
Fares on all Ryanair routes from Reus are available for €5 until midnight on Thursday (February 14). From the UK, Ryanair currently operates flights to Reus from Dublin, Glasgow, Liverpool, London Luton and Stansted. It will add flights from Birmingham in June, and in October it will start flights from Reus to Palma, Paris, Santander, Santiago, and Seville.
Mr O'Leary said Ryanair was in talks with five or six other Spanish airports about making one of them the airline's next hub in Spain, ‘probably for summer 2009’. However, after rapid expansion in Reus and other bases in Girona, Madrid, Valencia and Alicante, he said Spain was not his priority in the search for new bases.
