Birmingham Airport celebrate terminal 25th anniversary
07.06.09
Birmingham Airport is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the opening of its terminal building. The £29 million terminal was opened by the Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1984. Completed 12 weeks ahead of schedule it was one of the most modern facilities in the UK and Europe at the time.
The Airport has recently been granted planning permission to extend its runway to cater for more long-haul flights. It is also building a £40 million International Pier, a three-storey building for arriving and departing passengers.
Birmingham Airport chief executive Paul Kehoe said: ‘It is poignant that at a time when we are focusing on the future we should also be looking back to the opening of the airport’s current site. It certainly doesn’t seem 25 years since the airport unveiled its new terminal. This year also marks the airport’s 70th anniversary and the opening of our new International Pier.’
