Birmingham Airport wants old planes to join birthday celebrations

Birmingham Airport is offering pilots the chance to park their historic planes at the hub for almost five times less than it costs for passengers to leave their cars, as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, the Post reports.
Auster, de Havilland and Miles are names synonymous with the exciting, glamorous early days of flying, and Birmingham Airport aims to attract examples of these aircraft and other classic models back to the hub to help it celebrate its 70th birthday.
On September 9, an Emirates Airbus A380, the world’s biggest commercial passenger plane, will land at the airport for the first time to mark the anniversary. And the airport wants to contrast the old with the new - to attract aircraft to the event which were regular visitors in its early days. So for one day only it is offering a special landing fee of just £3.80 – less than the price of parking a car for 2 hours.
Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport’s chief executive officer, told the newspaper: ‘September 9 promises to be a significant day in the history of Birmingham Airport as we celebrate our 70th anniversary and the opening of the International Pier. It would be great if, on that day, people were given the opportunity to see some of the aircraft that were once regular visitors to the airport in the early days of operations. We hope those with interesting old aircraft can make a visit.’
