Birmingham Airport cuts aircraft emissions
05.09.10
Birmingham Airport has reduced emissions from aircraft by over 13,000 tonnes in the last year due to the use of smoother aircraft approaches called Continuous Descent Approach (CDA), This forces aircraft to descend on minimum power, make a smooth approach without leveling off. It has helped save around 10kg of fuel and 315kg of CO2 for every flight using the hub, and also cuts aircraft noise for local residents, and there is less whine as the engines are powered up each time the planes need to level off.
Ben Hanley, the airport's environment manager, said.‘We're always looking for opportunities to improve the noise climate for local residents and in 2006, we introduced the Operation Pathfinder scheme to create better communication channels and joined up thinking with our airlines and [air traffic control company] NATS. This partnership resulted in the launch of the CDA programme, and has also led to improvements to our 'on-track' performance, which saw 99 percent of all our departures in 2009 keeping within the designated flight paths.’
