Birmingham Airport introduce facial recognition passport control
04.03.10
Facial recognition scanners have been launched at Birmingham Airport as an alternative choice to queuing for traditional border control passport checks. Any British adults and those from within the EU are eligible to use the scanners as long as they hold a biometric passport containing a electronic chip.
Alex Lawther, from the UK Border Agency, stated the response to the brand new machines had been 'very favourable'. He said the machines are capable of discerning between identical twins.
Passengers swipe their passport into a machine then wait for their face to be scanned.
If the images match, the gates open and allow the passenger through passport control.
Mr Lawther said There is no need to be anxious about the storage of data. It [the scanner] only has access to data already saved in your passport.'
