Awards for Birmingham Airport ‘good neighbour’ airlines
03.05.08
A number of airlines operating from Birmingham Airport have received an award for being ‘good neighbours’. A special ceremony at the airport recognised those who had made efforts to ensure they did not fly below 3,000ft over densely-populated residential areas.
The awards ceremony is part of Operation Pathfinder, which was established to encourage airlines to fly within strict three kilometre-wide corridors, so that less people below are affected by noise and pollution.
Local MP Caroline Spelman suggested the awards ceremony over two years ago during regular meeting with the airport on behalf of her constituents. At this year's ceremony she said: ‘The second anniversary of Operation Pathfinder shows the commitment by the airport and the airlines to ensure that aircraft keep to their tracks.'
‘Airlines are aware of the issues that over-flying and low flying cause to residents. They are working with the airport to ensure that these movements do not have a negative effect on residents.’
The following airlines were the top award winners for 2007:
* Flybe - for the most improved track keeping performance
* Monarch - received a special award for working with the airport to improve track-keeping

* Aer Lingus - in the category of more than 100 flights a month
* Ryanair - in the category of more than 50 flights a month
