Birmingham Airport and Lufthansa celebrated 25 years of the airline operating from the hub yesterday. Marianne Sammann, Lufthansa’s general manager in the UK, said:
‘On 1st April 1986 Lufthansa came to Birmingham Airport offering 13 flights a week with a daily flight to Frankfurt operated using a Boeing 737 aircraft and a six days a week service to Dusseldorf using a 28 seat Embraer 120 Brasilia aircraft. Today we have five times as many flights, using bigger aircraft.’
She said that over 50 percent of passengers flying from Birmingham Airport with the airline use its onward connections, with the most popular destinations including Prague, Berlin, Vienna and Budapest. For the summer of 2011 Lufthansa is operating 65 flights every week from Birmingham Airport.
