Eastern axe Inverness - Birmingham flights
02.02.08
Eastern Airways is to axe its Inverness - Birmingham Airport flights in another serious blow to the Highland airport, the Press and Journal has reported. Eastern Airways' decision to cancel the twice-daily service from March 30 comes just weeks after the Highlands' only link with Heathrow was also axed.
Eastern blamed its decision to scrap the Birmingham flights on increased competition on the route, after low cost airline Flybe announced that it would operate a once-a-day service on the route from March.
A spokesman for Eastern Airways said: 'We are surprised and disappointed that Inverness Airport has attracted another carrier to this route, which cannot sustain two carriers. We have no alternative but to suspend flights on this niche route.' He said that anyone with a booking after March 30 would be given a full refund.
The spokesman said other routes operated by Eastern Airways from Inverness - Leeds-Bradford, Manchester and Southampton - were safe and there were no plans to cut any further routes.
