Residents happy Birmingham Airport has scrapped second runway plans

Local residents have reacted positively after it was revealed plans for a second runway at Birmingham Airport have been shelved. People living in the shadow of the airport, who say their lives had been put on hold while they waited for the much debated master plan, now feel that the blight on their homes has been lifted.
Last week the airport's acting managing director Joe Kelly revealed the revised proposals that focus on expanding the existing runway and creating a third terminal. Revised passenger projections mean that there is no longer a need for a second runway before 2030, he said.
Local MP Caroline Spelman, whose constituency covers the airport, said the decision means that local residents can begin to plan their lives again. She said: 'My constituents will be delighted to hear that they can take their lives off hold as there will be no new runway before 2030.'
'The airport has listened and the decision brings clarity to the situation. The local campaigners need to be commended on their resistance to the second runway.'
However, some residents were sceptical about the announcement. Although they were pleased that it means they are not going to have a runway at the end of the road, they wondered if the 'hype surrounding the second runway' was just a way of getting them to accept the extension of the existing one. One local said: 'I hope it wasn't a red herring.'
