Belfast to escape Aer Lingus pay cuts

Aer Lingus has confirmed that it is to seek pay cuts from its workforce after reporting an operating loss of €93m for the first six months of the year. However, the cuts are unlikely to affect the airline's employees based at Belfast International Airport, where, the airline said, its operation was ‘working extremely well’.
Announcing the losses, Aer Lingus said it was working on a restructuring plan to return the company to profitability. But a spokesman said that the Belfast operation was competitive and profitable. Aer Lingus corporate affairs director Enda Corneille said: ‘Our base in Belfast is working extremely well and if anything, we would like our operation in the Republic to emulate the type of flexibilities we have in Belfast.'
‘The reason for this is that our operation and cost base in Belfast are closely aligned to our nearest competitor, which means we can be more competitive on price and still be profitable as we showed in June, July and August of this year. The issue for us is the Republic, where our costs are out of line with our closest competitors.’
