New drop off ban at Belfast City Airport
29.04.09
Motorists will not be able to drop off passengers outside the terminal of Belfast City Airport from tomorrow as new security arrangements come into force. However, the change has been branded a ‘total and utter disgrace’ by former Lord Mayor Jim Rodgers, who also said they would cause a great deal of inconvenience.
The new arrangements are to prevent a recurrence of a terrorist attack such as the one at Glasgow Airport in June 2007. Under the new arrangements, anyone who wants to drop off or collect passengers must enter the new pick-up and drop-off facility within the Short Stay Car Park. Vehicles entering the car park for this purpose will be allowed 10 minutes’ free access. A covered walkway has been built from the car park to the terminal building.
Mark Beattie, director of operations at Belfast City Airport, said: ‘Whilst we appreciate that the public no longer have access to the front of the terminal, our car to gate distance remains one of the shortest in the UK. And while there will no longer be public access to the front of the terminal, additional staff will be present at the new drop-off and pick-up area and assistance will be provided to passengers with reduced mobility.’
