Problems with Belfast City Airport car park
19.03.08
A taxi driver wrote to the Belfast Telegraph about problems with the short stay car park at Belfast City Airport. After the terror attack at Glasgow Airport last June, the airport closed its drop off zone outside the terminal, and has been directing drivers to the short stay car park, where the first 15 minutes of any stay is currently fee.
There have been reports in the past of problems with this system, which encourages some frugal drivers to leave the car park every 15 minutes to go around and re-enter in order to avoid charges. The taxi drivers comments seem to confirm this.
The driver writes that, on approaching the airport entrance from the Holywood direction, he joined the queue in the right hand access lane. However, soon cars were 'dangerously queuing behind me' in the outside lane of the Sydenham bypass.
He adds that traffic was barely moving into the airport and there was a long queue trying to gain entry from the Belfast direction. After 10 minutes he was able to enter the airport but traffic was at a standstill.
He says that the short stay car park was half empty, so the problem 'seems to be access to this car park as picking up passengers at the terminal is not allowed.' He adds that on two other recent trips he was subjected to a 20-minute queue just to leave the short stay car park.
