Aer Lingus tipped to open Belfast base
23.07.07
Aer Lingus is gearing up to launch a base at a Belfast Airport, according to a report in the Times. The newspaper does not say which of Belfast's two airport's would get the base, which would be the airline's first outside of the Republic, but we would guess that it would go to Belfast International.
According to the newspaper, the move could see Aer Lingus launch up to 15 new routes from Belfast. It may be planning to reestablish a Belfast to London Heathrow route, the Times suggests.
We reported last month that the Irish flag carrier was looking at opening a base in the UK, but it is reported that Aer Lingus was swayed to choose Belfast instead of Birmingham as its new hub by DUP politician Jeffrey Donaldson, who said the Northern Ireland Executive would help the airline to establish itself north of the border.
