Mobile check-in test at Belfast City Airport
14.04.08
Passengers at Belfast City Airport will be the first in the UK to take part in a major experiment that will allow them to book themselves on board - and through security - simply by using their mobile phones. bmi are introducing the pilot scheme in four weeks time on their Belfast - Heathrow route. If it proves a success, they will make it available on all their UK flights.
The trial means that customers who book their seats on the airline's website have the option of the airline sending a barcode to their mobile phone that will enable them to go straight through security where the barcode will be checked, and again at the boarding gate. It is hoped that the new technology will substantially cut down on airport waiting times.
A bmi spokesman said: ‘The system will be completely paperless and will fast track anyone who wants to use it. It will be particularly convenient for business travellers, who - if they finish their meetings early or late - can simply have their PA change the details and have a new barcode sent.
‘We have made a huge investment in the technology for the scheme. We are the first airline to offer it and we are confident it will roll out to the rest of our flights. It is an exciting development in technology and will certainly cut down on airport waiting time.’
