Residents angry at Belfast City Airport passenger cap move
12.11.09
A campaign group has reacted angrily at a request by Belfast City Airport to remove the limit on the number of people flying in and out of the airport. Airport chief executive Brian Ambrose has written to Environment Minister Edwin Poots, asking him to remove the cap on seats that can be sold every year on inbound and outbound flights.
The limit forms part of a new Planning Agreement between the airport and the Department of the Environment, which came into force late last year. It limits the number of outgoing passengers at the airport and helps restrict the number of large, noisier jet aircraft using the hub.
Belfast City Airport Watch (BCAW), an umbrella group for residents associations affected by noise from the airport, fears this could see passenger numbers doubled. And it has said that if the move gets the go-ahead it fears the airport could start using larger planes, leading to more aircraft noise over south Belfast homes.
