Aer Lingus has celebrated the first birthday of the establishment of its Belfast base. It says the decision to launch flights from Belfast International Airport has been a success, with more than 750,000 bookings in its first year.
The airline had set a target of half a million bookings on its new routes from Belfast within twelve months and 500,000 passengers carried. The figure achieved for passengers was 600,000. Aer Lingus CEO Dermot Mannion said he was very confident about the future of its operations from Northern Ireland. He said the Belfast base, which employs 100 people, had set the model for efficiency.
Mr Mannion said the flagship Heathrow route, in less than a year of operation, had already grabbed more than 40% of the market share from bmi. The Heathrow service was already exceeding expectations and there was still room to grow, he said.
