Free bags at Belfast City Airport
04.10.09
Following much public pressure and criticism, George Best Belfast City Airport is to provide free plastic bags for passengers carrying liquids through security, the News Letter reports. The move will make Belfast City the first airport in Northern Ireland to supply transparent bags free of charge to its passengers.
Belfast City came under fire from the News Letter earlier this year for charging passengers £1 for four small plastic bags - when they probably only needed one. Passengers were often charged for bags because the ones they had brought were deemed the wrong size or not transparent enough by security officials.
A spokesman for the airport said the decision to provide the bags for free was made following customer research. The airport joins mainland airports such as Gatwick and Heathrow in dropping the payment. However, Belfast International Airport has no plans, at the moment, to reverse its policy. It continues to charge £1 for four small plastic bags.
