Councillor seeks Belfast International safeguards over City expansion
02.11.08
An Antrim councillor has asked the Environment Minister to protect the future of Belfast International Airport following recent developments at Belfast City Airport, the Antrim Times reports. Councillor Stephen Nicholl said a proposed extension to City Airport had the ‘potential to undermine the future’ of the International.
At a meeting with Antrim council last week, Environment Minister Sammy Wilson, was told that passenger numbers through the International had been affected following the launch of new services out of the city airport. Councillor Nicholl said: ‘Ryanair has increased passenger numbers at the city airport by 400,000. At the same time, domestic passenger numbers, over the same period, have dropped by some 399,200 at the International.’
