Belfast City Airport to submit runway plans
02.04.08
A spokesman for the Belfast City Airport told the Belfast Telegraph that they were aiming to lodge the application to extend their runway in the ‘second quarter’ of this year. Although the spokesman would not be any more specific, there is speculation that the application could be made as soon as next month. The news comes at press reports suggest that the airport might be for sale.
The proposal for a runway extension was first outlined last October by management at the Ferrovial-owned airport. The plan is to extend the runway at Sydenham from its existing length of 1,829m by 600m, which would increase the scope of the airport. Residents' groups are opposed to further expansion, but an Examination in Public in 2006 gave the green light to an increase in traffic.
Ryanair, which began operations at Belfast City Airport last October, has been campaigning for an extension to the runway, saying at the time that it would not have launched flights, and would not stay, without an extension because at present its Boeing 737-800 aircraft are subject to restrictions on the number of passengers they can carry on take-off. The aircraft, which has 189 seats, is permitted to carry only 140 passengers on departing flights, but if the runway was lengthened they would be able to carry a full payload.
