Flypast marks 40 years of North Sea rig operations at Aberdeen Airport
27.07.07
A pair of Bristow Super Pumas performed a flypast at Aberdeen Airport yesterday, to mark the 40th anniversary of the launch of North Sea helicopter operations. The two Super Pumas, one an AS332, the other, one of Bristow's newest EC225s, flew across the airport before bowing to the air traffic control tower.
On July 26th 1967 Captain Ernie Perrin landed on the Glomar IV drill rig in the Moray Firth to carry out the first North Sea offshore crew change. Since then, helicopter operations to the rigs have become a way of life for pilots operating out of Aberdeen Airport, carrying thousands of roughnecks every year.
Last year, the airport handled 37,000 helicopter flights carrying 468,000 passengers a year.
