Aberdeen Airport group call for Heathrow slot protection

Aberdeen Airport Consultative Committee has called for slots for regional services to be safeguarded at Heathrow. It made the call in its response to the UK Government's consultation on a third runway at the London airport, which ends today.
Chairman of the committee, Peter Smart, said: ‘The business community in Aberdeen and the north-east requires regular reliable air services to Heathrow to get to meetings in London and the south-east of England and also for hassle-free connections to vital business destinations across the globe. The alternatives of a seven-hour train journey each way or a 12- hour drive to London are just not practical.’
'The committee agreed that we should press the government to ensure that there is a system of slot preservation for Aberdeen and other regional airports furthest from London, as part of the building of a third runway. Ideally, approval to build the extra runway should be conditional on an increase in the number of slots for these services.'
'The committee wants to ensure that any increase in capacity brings benefits to travellers from the north-east, as well as attracting revenue-generating business and tourism to Aberdeen city and shire.’
The Scottish Council for Development and Industry also said last week that guaranteed take-off and landing slots at Heathrow for flights from Aberdeen and Inverness should be a condition to giving the go-ahead to plans for the third runway.
