Aberdeen Airport in talks over new routes
24.10.07
More than a dozen new destinations are being lined up for Aberdeen Airport. The news comes after the airport lost a number of routes recently. The new routes under discussion include the first regular flights to Greece, holiday favourite Lanzarote, fashion capital Milan, and destinations in Eastern Europe. Airport owner BAA is also discussing a service to Stansted, an addition to its existing Heathrow and Luton links.
As well as Lanzarote, targeted destinations for the airport include Corfu, Athens or Crete, Munich or Frankfurt; Warsaw, and other cities in Eastern Europe. Grenoble in France and Milan could be skiing destinations, along with Geneva in Switzerland - a service which airline flyglobespan promised but failed to deliver earlier this year. For the UK there is also the hope of a link to Cardiff.
The list was drawn up after consultations with airlines in the hope a sound business case can be made for introducing services. Airport managing director Kevin Brown said the destinations were picked for their commercial potential. He said: 'This follows consultations and research with our passengers, business customers and with airlines,' adding that all of the destinations were 'realistic options' for the next year.
The news comes after Scottish budget airline flyglobespan axed winter services to Alicante, Cyprus, Faro, Madeira, Palma and Prague, plus a summer service to Jersey, blaming high airport charges, a charge BAA rejected.
Mr Brown said BAA was doing everything possible to win new routes and so widen the choice of international and domestic destinations. He added: 'We will not get all of these routes, but we always aim to bring the very best options to the region and to the travelling public.'
