Aberdeen Airport seize 13 year old girl’s compasses

A 13 year old schoolgirl travelling to a national mathematics competition had a pair of compasses confiscated at Aberdeen Airport after staff told her the instrument was ‘dangerous’, the Press & Journal reports.
Caitlin Rees had the sharp-pointed instrument in her luggage at Aberdeen Airport when she was on her way to take part in the national finals of the UKMT Maths Challenge in London this week. She said: ‘They told me that it was dangerous and they tried to take it apart in front of me. Then it was taken away and put in the bin. I didn't know why they were making such a big fuss – it was only a compass.’
An Aberdeen Airport spokesman, however, said security staff at the airport had to remove any items that could ‘pose a danger to passengers’. Apparently that includes a pair of compasses, but if this is the case, should it not also include pens (particularly those with a metal refill), pencils and even a belt buckle.
