Flight delay at Aberdeen airport over suspect bag
24.05.08
Passengers were stranded on the tarmac at Aberdeen Airport for more than three hours last night because a pilot feared a suspect bag may have been on board the aircraft. The 19:10 bmibaby flight from Aberdeen to Birmingham did not take off until 22:30, with passengers forced to get off the plane and identify their bags.
The problem was caused after a failure in Aberdeen Airport’s check-in system resulted in passengers having to be checked on to the flight manually. The passengers boarded 20 minutes late, but once on board there was confusion about how many people were supposed to be there and how many bags there should be. As a result, the pilot refused to take off, telling passengers he could not leave until he was certain that there was the right number of passengers and bags on board.
The aircraft finally headed for the Midlands at 22:30 after all the luggage was put back on board. A spokesman for bmibaby said: ‘There was a failure with the check-in system. This led to a baggage and head-count discrepancy. For security reasons there had to be a manual check.’
