Storms leave hundreds stranded at Aberdeen Airport
22.07.07
Hundreds of passengers flying to and from Aberdeen Airport were marooned due to bad weather sweeping across the UK. The problems saw three flights from Aberdeen to Heathrow cancelled on Friday night, with four flights in the other direction also scrapped. A number of flights yesterday were also affected.
Problems began in London when planes could not land due to severe weather sweeping southern England and Wales. A number of flights earlier in the day had delays of several hours as rain and high winds pounded the south of the country.
The heavy wind and rain then stranded hundreds of Aberdeen-bound passengers at Heathrow, with similar numbers waiting to fly from Dyce to Heathrow on the same planes affected in turn. The first flight for Heathrow yesterday, at 08:40, was also cancelled.
A British Airways spokesman said: 'Due to the extreme weather conditions at Heathrow and across the south of England restrictions have been place by Air Traffic Control on how many flights can operate at Heathrow. This has had a knock-on impact on our flying programme.'
'We are rebooking customers where there are seats available and apologise for the delays. Customer are advised to check on the website for the latest information or to rebook their flight they can call 0800 727 800.'
A spokesman for Aberdeen Airport said: 'Unfortunately there's nothing we can do about the weather. We're speaking with British Airways and helping contact airport passengers. We're providing any assistance we can.'
