Aberdeen Airport near miss
21.11.08
Aviation officials are probing a near miss between two passenger planes 6,000ft above Aberdeen, the Press & Journal reports. Another near miss between a helicopter and aircraft above Sumburgh in Shetland is also under investigation by the Civil Aviation Authority’s UK Airprox Board.
The authority has confirmed that an Aircraft Proximity report has been filed after a Boeing 737 and a Jetstream 41 got too close above the city on August 12. Both aircraft were en route to Aberdeen Airport and getting air traffic control instructions for the city’s airport when the incident happened at 17:00.
In addition, a Jetstream 41, which can hold 29 passengers, was involved in a near miss above Sumburgh, Shetland, on July 22. The Aberdeen-bound aircraft and a Sikorsky helicopter got too close to one another at 2,800ft.
Eastern Airways confirmed to the newspaper that the Jetstream 41 planes involved in both incidents belonged to them. Both were chartered flights. An Aircraft Proximity report — known as an airprox — is now being considered by the UK Airprox Board, which investigates all near-miss incidents involving aircraft in British airspace, for each incident.
