Airports ‘losing domestic passengers to rail’
19.08.08
Scotland's three biggest airports posted falling passenger numbers for July in what their owner BAA said was a symptom of soaring fuel prices and the credit crunch, the Herald reports.
Passengers were down 2.3% from the same month a year ago, as almost 2.2 million people passed through Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen Airport in July, the peak month for summer getaways. International traffic was up by 2.3%, but domestic business was down, by 6.8%.
Experts say the numbers suggest BAA and its airline customers are, among other problems, facing new and real competition from rail for passengers travelling within Britain.
The downturn in domestic flights is set to continue this winter as BA and other airlines axed flights and trains from Scotland to the south are expected to get even faster after Christmas.
