Another blow for Aberdeen Airport as bmi scraps Amsterdam route
10.08.07
Aberdeen Airport suffered another blow yesterday, when bmi confirmed it is stopping flight to Amsterdam. The airline has already stopped its flights to Brussels from Aberdeen.
bmi currently operates 11 flights a week from Aberdeen to the Dutch capital, however flights can only be booked until August 31, after which is will withdraw the service. However, a spokesman for Aberdeen Airport said Amsterdam was 'the most popular international destination' from the North-east and stressed passengers could continue travelling to the Dutch capital by flying direct from Aberdeen with KLM.
A spokesman for bmi said: 'This in no way diminishes our overall support for the Aberdeen region. Overall our performance at Aberdeen continues to be double-digit growth and we continue to look at opportunities to develop new routes.' The airline plans to increase its service from Aberdeen to Manchester to seven return flights a day at the start of September.
It is another blow for Aberdeen Airport which has seen six services axed in just over a month. Edinburgh-based FlyGlobespan recently announced it will be withdrawing its flights to Geneva.
In addition Ryanair recently announced it will stop its Liverpool flights. Fledgling carrier Jetstream Express scrapped its Aberdeen - Blackpool service, bmi is scrapping its Brussels flights and Monarch is scrapping its Malaga flights.
