Aberdeen Airport runway resurfacing work launched
07.04.09
The multimillion-pound project to resurface the main runway at Aberdeen Airport started this week. The £7.2 million scheme is expected to be completed by the end of October and involves removing the top layer of the runway and replacing it with a new surface, which is expected to last for 15 years.
Airport managing director Kevin Brown said: ‘This is an extensive programme of work required a great deal of careful planning and consultations with our airline partners and local communities. We expect there to be very little impact on those living around the airport and little or no disruption to airport operations.'
‘As a very busy airport and a vital component of the oil and gas industry, we cannot simply close the airport while this work is carried out, so the majority of the work will be carried out overnight, when the runway can be closed, to minimise the impact on passengers and airport operations.’
The resurfacing work will not affect plans to extend the runway. A spokeswoman for the airport said: ‘The two issues are being dealt with separately. We are waiting for a decision on the extension but, if we do get the go-ahead, both projects could be carried out at the same time.’
