MSP calls for Aberdeen Airport runway extension

BAA has been urged to invest some of the money it will generate from the sale of either Edinburgh or Glasgow airports into bringing forward plans to extend the runway at Aberdeen Airport, the Press & Journal reports. Aberdeen MSP Brian Adam has raised the issue with BAA chief executive Colin Matthews, saying that the Aberdeen hub has been used as a ‘cash cow’ for too long and must benefit from the millions a sale will yield.
Mr Adam told the newspaper that spending £10 million to lengthen the runway by 328 yards would allow larger and more fuel-efficient aircraft to land, and open up the opportunity for new routes to the north-east. BAA was recently awarded planning permission for the project, and Mr Adam says early implementation of the plan would give a boost to local jobs and business during the recession.
