Nimrod pays flying visit to Aberdeen Airport
06.03.08
Aberdeen Airport received a rare flying visit last weekend when a Nimrod aircraft flew in to refuel, the Press and Journal reports. The MR2 dropped into the airport on Saturday evening on its way back from Akrotiri in Cyprus to its base at RAF Kinloss in Moray, just 60 miles from Aberdeen.
An RAF spokeswoman said: ‘The original plan was to refuel at RAF Lyneham in England before going to Kinloss. On entering UK airspace, the crew calculated they had enough fuel to make it back to Kinloss without stopping, however, they experienced more headwinds than anticipated, and as a precaution, they refueled at Aberdeen before going to Kinloss.’
A spokesman for Aberdeen Airport said: ‘We can confirm that a Nimrod landed at the airport at about 17:30 on Saturday, refuelled and took off a short time later. This is pretty unusual, they don't come in that often.’
