Ryanair increase card booking fee
22.03.11
Ryanair has increased the administration fee charged on flights bought with most debit or credit cards from £5 to £6 – the highest of any airline – flightmapping.com reports. The handling fee applies to each flight segment and for every passenger, resulting in the card charge for a family of four buying return flights increasing from £40 to £48.
Most banks and card companies usually only charge around 2.5% of the total payment on credit cards and around 20p of the total transaction for a debit card, so the card fee represents a massive mark-up for the airline. The only way to avoid being stung by the fee is to use a prepaid Mastercard. A Ryanair spokesman told Flightmapping: ‘We encourage all our passengers to make the switch (to the prepaid Mastercard)’.
