New Stansted Express trains unveiled
18.03.11
New trains to take passengers to and from Stansted Airport have been unveiled by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond. The 30 four-carriage trains will operate National Express East Anglia's services to Stansted from the end of the year, and also between London and Cambridge.
The 120 new carriages in the 100mph Class 379 trains are part of the 2100 extra carriages promised by the Government by 2019 and will provide 11,000 more seats a day for travellers on the routes.
Unveiling the first trains of the new fleet at London's Liverpool Street station, Mr Hammond said: ‘Our national plans for over 2,100 extra carriages for our commuter railways will increase capacity, ease overcrowding and make our railways fit for the 21st century. These new trains will also be faster and greener than the older rolling stock they replace.’
