New Stansted baggage scanning firm announced

The GMB union has welcomed the arrival of a new company to operate security scanners at Stansted Airport, starting from today. The union's 34 members have held a number of strikes in an ongoing pay dispute and bosses of the previous company, Airfield Services, were alleged to have drafted in catering staff to check luggage before it was loaded into aircraft holds.
The Stansted Airline Operators Committee has now awarded the security scanner contract to Mitie Transport, after Airfield Services walked away from the work. GMB organiser Gary Pearce said: ‘We are looking forward to discussing with the new contractor Mitie Transport a way of settling this long-running dispute. We hope and trust that they will do the right thing by the 34 GMB members whose work protects Britain's travelling public.’
Confirming the change, a spokeswoman for Airfield Services said: ‘Our baggage screening contract at Stansted came to an end on October 10. We have been working closely with our employees and will continue to do so to ensure the necessary transition arrangements are in place.’
Tony Medhurst, a director of Mitie said: ‘We're delighted to have been selected by the Stansted Airport Airline Operating Committee and look forward to working with them, BAA, and the existing security team in ensuring a smooth transfer of the hold baggage-screening contract. This success builds on our presence at Heathrow, Gatwick and Bristol Airports.'
