Stansted strike firm pulls out
04.10.08
The firm responsible for luggage scanning at Stansted Airport has pulled out of the contract following a series of pay strikes. Gate Aviation Services announced that its baggage screening contract would end on 10 October, but its 34 staff will keep their jobs with a new contractor.
Thirty four GMB union members working for Gate went on strike in the summer after rejecting a 2% improved pay offer. A spokesman for Gate said at that time it was disappointed staff chose ‘to reject the company's improved pay offer of 2% and a further 2.2% in January 2009’.
The workers will keep their jobs under continuation of employment rules after Gate Aviation terminated the contract following a period of notice because it was ‘untenable’, a spokeswoman said. A new contractor will take over responsibility for scanning luggage after 10 October. The GMB welcomed the move and said it looked forward to working with the new contractor to settle the row.
