Fire hoses from Stansted Airport recycled by zoo
02.08.11
Animals at Colchester Zoo received an unusual gift from Stansted Airport’s Fire and Rescue Service this week. Their old hoses have been turned in to balls, ropes and hammocks so that animals including the African elephants and Amur tigers can play.
Clive Barwick, curator at Colchester Zoo said, ‘It’s not quite like seeing a domestic cat playing with a ball but the Amur tigers definitely enjoy pawing at and exploring the balls made from the fire hoses, which are also sprayed with different scents and perfumes to give them some interesting smells to sniff out. And primates like our rare lion tailed macaques like swinging around in their hammocks made from the hoses.’
‘We are getting pretty imaginative at creating interesting enrichment devices for the animals, so if you work for a company that may be disposing of items that you think we can use please do let us know. From shredded paper that we use for animal bedding to large ropes and camouflage nets, tractor tyres and giant tubes from carpet companies we are keen to hear from you.’
