Southend Airport boss: Gatwick sale would not hit us
23.08.08
The sale of a major London airport by BAA – most likely Gatwick, but also possibly Stansted – would have no impact on the future of Southend Airport, managing director Alastair Welch told the Echo.
The lease of Southend Airport was put up for sale earlier this year by owner Regional Airports, with a price tag of £50 million. Confirmation of a buyer for Southend’s lease was expected some time in the past few weeks and there have been concerns that the likely sale of one or two London airports by BAA might divert funds from Southend.
However, Mr Welch dismissed these suggestions. He told the Echo: ‘The break up of BAA is something entirely different to Southend. You are looking at three very large airports and there have been concerns about the size, more than the number owned by BAA. I do not believe there would be any impact on our sale from these latest proposals.’
