Flypast marks Southampton flight centenary
26.07.10
A centenary of flight in south Hampshire was marked yesterday with a special flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The flypasts over Southampton Water included Hurricanes, a Lancaster and Spitfires, which were built locally. The Spitfire took its first test flight from what is now Southampton Airport in 1936.
In 1910 Edwin Rowland Moon was Southampton's first aviator. He made his flight from North Stoneham Farm, now Southampton Airport. The centenary event, organised by Eastleigh Borough Council, was watched by hundreds of people.
