Flybe emergency at Southampton Airport
04.10.09
Passengers on a flybe flight to Southampton Airport were told to prepare for an emergency landing after a mid-air drama minutes before landing yesterday. A burning smell filled the cabin of the 14:25 flight from Edinburgh as the plane prepared for its descent.
Crew ordered passengers to tighten their seat belts as they attempted to locate the problem. On the ground, teams of firefighters from Eastleigh and Southampton were put on standby as a precaution. When the jet finally touched down, firefighters rushed on board while engineers investigated the problem.
A spokesman from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed that a bearing in the plane's air conditioning system had overheated.
