Southampton Airport prepares to mark centenary of flight
02.06.10
The centenary of flight in South Hampshire will be marked with a special flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight this Summer. The event, organised by Eastleigh Borough Council, will take place on the afternoon of Saturday July 24, and will include 3 flypasts over the Southampton Water area.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight includes a trio of historic aircraft that will over fly areas of both Eastleigh and Southampton to mark the birth of aviation in the region 100 years ago this year. The trio will include; the Hurricane, the UK’s only flying Lancaster and the Spitfire, which was designed and built locally and took its first test flight from Southampton Airport in 1936.
The flypast aims to celebrate 100 years since the first flight at Southampton Airport when Edwin Rowland Moon triumphantly flew his homemade Moonbeam II aircraft from the fields of North Stoneham Farm (now Southampton Airport).
Details of the best vantage points and timings will be widely publicised closer to the time. However, the aircraft can be viewed along the waterfront from Weston Shore to Hamble Point, and from on the water itself. To find out more, or to get involved please visit www.centenary-of-flight.co.uk.
