Record Robin Hood Airport weapons seizures
16.11.10
A record haul of more than 100 weapons was seized from passengers arriving at Robin Hood Airport in a clampdown over the summer months. The weapons included throwing stars, CS gas, machetes, stun guns, samurai swords, knives and imitation firearms, the UK Border Agency has said.
The weapons were all found during an operation lasting from May to October this year. The haul was the biggest during any five-month period since the airport opened in 2005 and were all taken from people arriving from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Greece, Ibiza, Majorca and other Spanish destinations and Turkey.
The UK Border Agency said it had worked alongside South Yorkshire Police ‘to prevent these weapons ending up on our streets’. All the weapons were destroyed, the agency said.
