MP says Prestwick Airport passenger numbers ‘encouraging’
30.04.09
The number of passengers using Prestwick Airport has increased compared to last month, but is down on last year, the Record reports. Local MP Brian Donohoe told the newspaper that 149,994 passengers passed through the airport in March, up on the previous month. Freight traffic also increased from February to March.
The MP for Central Ayrshire says he’s quietly optimistic about the news, although he did admit that the figures are down on the same period last year. He told the newspaper: ‘On paper that doesn’t look good. However, I think it’s important to read between the lines. As the recession entered our lives air travel has been hit everywhere. So to see the figures starting to increase again at Prestwick is encouraging. We can only hope the upwards trend continues.’
Mr Donohoe is hopeful that the improvement in freight figures will continue too. He explained: ‘Until last month, the figures were heading resolutely downwards after Atlas/Polar – the airport’s largest freight customer – ceased operations. Last month the figures stabilised, and this month they’ve actually increased for the first time in a long while. So I hope that a corner has now been turned and that figures will continue to increase from now on.’
