Ryanair add 5 Prestwick routes, cut others
29.07.09
Ryanair announced five new routes from Prestwick Airport today. But it will also cancel or reduce frequency on six of its existing routes. An extra 100,000 passengers are expected to use Prestwick, but inbound visitors numbers will fall by 100,000 every year.
The budget airline's winter timetable will include new services to Alicante, Arrecife in Lanzarote, Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, and Palma. A fifth new route to Ibiza will begin on March 10. The airline also plans to increase the frequency on flights to Faro, Malaga and Tenerife South.
The routes to be cancelled or scaled back in October are Budapest, Milan, Rome, Stockholm, Marseille and Frankfurt Hahn. The changes will increase the number of people using the airport but reduce the number of inbound visitors to Scotland, as the airline shifts its focus from city links to holiday destinations targeting Scottish travellers.
The changes are part of an initiative which will see Ryanair open 39 new routes this winter to take advantage of Spanish tax concessions. Spain is offering a 100% discount on airport charges this winter, but Ryanair said the continuation of the new routes beyond March 31 next year was dependent on the extension of the discount.
