Prestwick Airport handled 180,978 passengers in March, an increase of 7 percent compared to 2006 and an 18 percent improvement on February's total. The airport also opened a new long term car park during the month.
During the month of March, most scheduled destinations from Prestwick showed year on year growth in load factors (the number of full seats per plane), with southern European routes performing particularly well. Freight traffic also continued to improve, with 3,092 tonnes handled last month, it was up 35 percent and represented the strongest monthly performance since October 2005.
Prestwick handled 2,401,305 passengers in the year to the end of March 2007 - a 1 percent increase on the 2006 figure of 2,368,755. The annual freight total was 30,513 tonnes, a year on year rise of 8 percent.
In March a new 1,500 space long stay economy airport car park opened for business. This new car park will compete with the off-site operators by offering a lowest price guarantee and high quality product and service, a spokesman said.
In addition a new Elvis Presley theme bar (the airport is the only place The King set foot in the UK), part of SSP's £1 million programme of food and beverage improvements at Prestwick, opened during the month in the departures lounge.
